I sat on the top of the steps alone, gazing down at the living room. We’d come from a Halloween party at Trailer Trash on a mission to smoke opium. Had it been a few days earlier, I would’ve gladly tried it to gather information for the plot of Last Boat to Manchuria, but by then it seemed pointless. My screenwriting instructor had just returned my screenplay. He called it trite and derivative and overly-melodramatic, with wooden characters. He suggested I scratch the whole thing and start over with something more worthwhile. I read his words, standing on the grass outside the literature building, as if they weren’t real, like they might change if I rewound the day and started it over again. I’d no idea what I would write in its place, but the scene below me looked like a good start.

Isabella, dressed as Wonder Woman, suggested the group get naked and wrap themselves in plastic wrap. Most seemed unsure, but Paul Veracruz dropped the canvas hat and whip of his Indiana Jones costume and became the first to disrobe and wrap himself up as snugly as leftovers. Tony, the soccer player, and Mark, the cop, followed, mercifully. Mark had swaggered around the party flashing a badge and shining a flashlight in everyone’s eyes, which gave me the chills. I was on edge after the day of action fiasco and I was on edge around Mark Israel anyway, so the combination was unfortunate.

Roberta and Jean-Claude relinquished their roles as Billy Dee Williams and Diana Ross from the Billie Holiday movie in favor of playing the roles of Roberta and Jean-Claude in plastic wrap, and Victor, formerly dressed as Batman, modestly removed his costume in the corner.

It was just as well: the Batman mask had made him look alarmingly mysterious, and nearly sent me into despair. In his bed, I had felt that for just a moment I was finally back to living life like everyone else does. But that passing contentedness had been robbed from me just as soon as I grasped it, and now I sat above the room watching a perfectly even number of guys and girls smoke opium in my living room, nude, wrapped in plastic wrap: Paul Veracruz and his girlfriend, Sheila, Roberta and Jean-Claude, Victor, Isabella, Mark and Tony, and two blond girls I didn’t recognize. Perfectly even except for me—the odd man out—Augie Schoenberg, a.k.a. Armando Aguilar, the right fielder for the Chicago White Sox, imagining I’d be so happy in this costume, as if it’d make me feel like I was a star, or at least a different person for a while.

To my horror, Isabella loosened her Saran Wrap till it floated off of her like so much dead skin. She stood before Victor naked, her brown pussy hair as thick and coarse as a badger. Soon, Paul and Sheila removed their plastic coating and Paul’s little arrow-shaped dick sprung upwards into an erection. The couple eased themselves to the floor and began making out.
